Hello,

I'm John Doing and I teach Rockin' Music Lessons. I'm a professional percussionist and I play many other instruments as well. My parents are both music teachers and I learned to play piano from a young age.

I've worked as adjunct faculty at universities, given college masterclasses, and taught music in a variety of schools and programs for ages K-12. After teaching for almost 15 years, I still truly enjoy spending time with students and teaching them everything I can about musicianship and how to play.

Here are some places I have worked as a teacher:

Teaching Locations

I grew up in Amsterdam, Netherlands and Madison, WI. I started drumming in middle school band and since then have spent my whole life playing and teaching.

In addition to gigging on drumset, percussion, and keyboard with bands of many styles, I enjoy playing in symphony orchestra, musical theater, and dance performances.

While getting my Masters in Music at New York University, I played many styles in diverse venues from the Blue Note, 55 Bar, Fat Cat, Groove, and Jazz at Lincoln Center, to the Bitter End, Rockwood Music Hall, Joe's Pub, and off-Broadway.

From 2016-2017 I played the 14-month First National Tour of the 2015 Tony Award ® Winning Broadway show Fun Home. As of 2020, I play percussion for Hamilton: an American Musical in San Francisco where I have also been a sub on the drumset book.

I've had many great teachers including Dafnis Prieto, Stefon Harris, Anthony DiSanza, Mike Spiro, and Jorge Alabe. I have traveled (and continue to travel) extensively in Latin America, West Africa, and the Caribbean to learn those percussion styles from the source.
